We're Ryan & Jem — welcome to The Calm Riot.
We're a couple based in Spokane, Washington with a story that started on opposite sides of the world and landed us here, figuring out life together one adventure at a time.
Our story
Ryan grew up in the Inland Northwest — the mountains, the open roads, and the wide skies are in his bones. Jem grew up in the Philippines, where food is the center of everything, hospitality is a way of life, and family means showing up no matter what.
On May 14th, 2025, Jem landed in the United States as a permanent resident and began building her new life here alongside Ryan. What followed was equal parts exciting and overwhelming — a new country, a new home, a new chapter. We decided to document all of it honestly.
That's what The Calm Riot is. It's the record of two people from very different worlds learning to build one life together — the road trips, the home-cooked meals, the first times experiencing things through fresh eyes, and the everyday moments that don't make highlight reels but matter just as much.
Who we are
Jem brings the energy, the warmth, and a perspective on life that only comes from navigating a completely new world with curiosity instead of fear. She's the one with the idea, the flavor instincts, and the ability to make anyone feel welcome at the table — a skill deeply rooted in Filipino culture that she carries everywhere she goes.
Ryan brings the steadiness. He's the one checking the weather, planning the route, and making sure they actually make it home. Reserved where Jem is outgoing, grounded where she sparks — together they balance each other out in ways that make for genuinely good watching.
What we cover
Travel — Road trips, hikes, and hidden spots around the Inland Northwest and beyond. We also document what it's like experiencing American landmarks and landscapes for the first time through Jem's eyes — which turns out to be a pretty great way to see them.
Food & Recipes — A mix of Inland Northwest cooking and Filipino flavors. What happens when two food cultures share a kitchen is something we're still happily discovering.
Everyday Life — The real stuff. Setting up a home together, navigating life as an international couple, gear we love, and the honest in-between moments that don't fit neatly into a category.
Where we're based
Spokane, Washington — which puts us within reach of the Cascades, the PNW coast, high desert, and some of the most underrated outdoor spaces in the country. We take advantage of that as much as we can.
Why we do this
Because we wanted to watch a channel like this and couldn't find one that felt like real people. An international couple, a big move, a new life being built in real time — we figured if we wanted to see it, others probably did too.
We're not full-time creators. We have jobs, a home, and a life that looks a lot like yours — just with a Filipino-American twist and a lot of Inland Northwest miles on the odometer.
